5 Camping Books for Toddlers

Books are an excellent way to spark enthusiasm about new experiences. Even going to the dentist was an exciting experience for Sam after reading Curious George Goes to the Dentist. Before heading to Yosemite for Sam’s first tent camping experience, we checked out a pile of books about camping from the library. It worked! He was very excited to camp and asked to read the books while camping, too.

5 Camping Books for Toddlers

Maisy Goes Camping

1. Maisy Goes Camping by Lucy Cousins

Sam requested Maisy Goes Camping the most. Playful drawing style, fun wording such as “squeezy squish-squash”, and the silliness of fitting so many animals into the tent made this perfect for a 2 year old.

Camping Day

2. Camping Day by Patricia Lakin, Scott Nash

Camping Day is another book Sam asked for frequently. The rhymes and repetition held his attention through the end. The characters gave up and went home at the end, which is not great to read to a toddler camping for the first time. However, Sam did not seem phased. It was simply a book about silly alligators going camping.

S is for S'mores

3. S is for S’mores: A Camping Alphabet by Helen Foster James, Lita Judge

My favorite one on the list for the beautiful illustrations. Alphabet books are almost always a win for Sam, too. Each page has a lot of text, but the letter and brief description before the longer description is a good amount for a toddler. It was also a good way to introduce a lot of camping terminology. Although, I don’t think “winter camping” will ever become part of our everyday language. 😉

Curious George Goes Camping

4. Curious George Goes Camping by Margret & H.A. Rey

Typical Curious George antics. Surprisingly, Sam never wanted to finish this one. Normally, he is a fan of the Curious George books.

A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee

5. A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen

A camping book that could possibly scare a child away from camping from their slightly scary run in with a bear. Although, it is a good reminder to lock away the food in a bear locker! Overall, A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee is a cute story with fun rhymes and nice illustrations.
